I got the pattern from the "Life is a Stitch" blog. I have a picture of the one that I made up on my blog, with a link to hers. I completed the quilt top in two weekends! It's a lap quilt 52 x 64. Good luck! If you incorporate at least one pocket from the shirts into each quilt you can place some of the smaller notes and articles from each child into the pocket. It would be fun for the kids to find the old articles their grandpa saved on Christmas and later it becomes a fun element of the quilt.Windsom Windshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00247781951022966158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8408237466680431412.post-52473108756548614752010-09-02T21:23:41.899-05:002010-09-02T21:23:41.899-05:00Wow, that would be amazing. I think large squares would be the way to go, and if you backed them in polar fleece, sewed them up pillowcase-style and tied the 2 layers at the square intersections with floss, you just might get'er done!Poppyprinthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08251892807966340175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8408237466680431412.post-51037539526660185292010-09-01T18:53:17.311-05:002010-09-01T18:53:17.311-05:00Make that email address maggiehagman (at) gmail (d...Make that email address maggiehagman (at) gmail (dot) comMaggiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10112274613315147129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8408237466680431412.post-19602593613464815352010-09-01T18:51:59.255-05:002010-09-01T18:51:59.255-05:00I live in the Twin Cities area and have made many ...I live in the Twin Cities area and have made many of these types of quilts. Stitch in the ditch and attach a label and binding and you've got a quilt. I saw one done like this and it looked so soft and cozy. What memories your family will have when they receive a quilt from Grandpa's clothes. You could also take some of the cards and stuff and scan them on to fabric for the background of a quilt label.Mary-Kayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10939245117285165710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8408237466680431412.post-59263831579426497042010-08-31T11:54:19.115-05:002010-08-31T11:54:19.115-05:00I just put together a "recycled" quilt l...I just put together a "recycled" quilt last night using old t-shirts and military uniforms from my hubby. The top was finished in "one naptime" and a couple of hours last night. It's a little smaller than a twin size, but the top is roughly 56x76. The hardest part was working with the stretchiness of the shirts, which it looks like your fabric won't have that problem! I think you should be able to get the tops done quickly once you figure out a rough plan!Joriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03766976747938576247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8408237466680431412.post-22278194526370315342010-08-31T10:41:37.530-05:002010-08-31T10:41:37.530-05:00Last February my brother passed away suddenly and ...Last February my brother passed away suddenly and his girlfriend saved me some of his shirts. I made a rag quilt for her from them. I chose to do this kind because I felt it represented him best. A little frayed around the edges and a good centre. If you think about your father-in-law's life you will come up with something that will represent what he meant to everyone. One with squares and one with strips. They each were completed tops in basically one day. If you had a plan with a simple, similar pattern and had a cutting marathon, followed by a few pretty serious days and a budget for a machine quilter...yes, it is possible.
