Our Garden...

We started our garden indoors back in April. This is our very first garden and we have already learned quite a few lessons.

I couldn't wait to get things in the ground because they were starting to take over my windows and I was tired of it.

Our Tomato plants were BIG and getting tomatos already.

First we had to scout the perfect spot. This was difficult because we have alot of hills and trees.

Once we had it roped off - we the husband had to dig out the giant rocks.

Then we rented a rototiller and broke ground!!

Next we told the kids we would pay them 50 cents for every bucket of rocks they removed.

Now I grew up in North Dakota which is just one state over - where the dirt is BLACK and full of nutrients. It's some of the best farm land in this country. But - up here in Northern Minnesota, the soil is sandy and full of rocks. So we had some good black ND dirt delivered...
 We spread it all around...
And this past weekend.. we planted. Being bent over and squatting all day has made me walk funny for days to come. But it's totally worth it!
I planted my Cherry Tomato plants in pots up on the deck.. see them up there?
I also planted melons in these hanging planters.. can't wait for them to grow. The little tryke was something we found in the woods one day. Makes me wonder where it came from and how it ended up in the woods.
And this... this would be our offical waterer.. ready at a moment's notice!

  1. Woohoo! Congratulations on getting your vegie garden up and running!! I've been meaning to start one up the last couple of years but haven't managed to get anything done. Enjoy the fruits of your labour - you deserve it!!!

  5. Yay for gardens! I hope you get a bumper crop this year. It's funny that the trees grow so well and the tiny little vegetables need better soil. I've got a Japanese maple that I can't stop, but you'd think I had poisoned my bell peppers.

  6. YEA! We have a great garden going here! Best of luck! It's a perfect way for kids (and adults) to eat healthier (and cheaper). Love, love, love our garden! That rock/pain/marker idea is super!

  7. Oh wow, you're not messing around, are you? lol And here I thought I went overboard when I started my plants indoors. I ended up with 6 round pots and about 6 window boxes. I did NOT have dirt trucked in! lol

  8. Good luck with the garden! I'm curious about putting the melon plants in the hanging pots. Is that just until you replant them?

  10. Oh Heidi, it's so funny....you're planting your garden and mine is finished. The heat is so oppressive that the squash plants have died and the tomatoes are slowing down. The corn's been done. The only happy plants are the okra and purple hulls. Good luck. If you have any questions, just ask. I've been gardening for years, but those are all in the south!

  11. I LOVE LOVE it!! Started my seedlings indoors in the beginning of march and I have nothing near the size of your tomatoes. I'm totally jealous of your new garden - living in Long Beach, we don't have alot of yard space so I need to leave room for the daughter and the dog. :-0
