A Sad.. Sad.. Depressing Day!

See this picture.... It's an awesome Quilt Store that I stop at frequently when I make the 4 hour drive to see my family. It is located in Detroit Lakes MN.

Well, when I drove by this past weekend.. this is what I saw....

I cried.. I bawled... I stomped around in the snow...  and threw myself on the porch.. Then after scaring my kids with my unexplained grief.. I pulled myself together and grabbed the camera. I just couldn't believe it. It's an awesome store!!!

So today I called - they said they will close the doors in February. I'm headed to see my family again this coming weekend and will be stopping in to say goodbye and scoop up some deals!

It makes me so sad because it is such an awesome store. I've been to a few quilt stores in my day that wouldn't make me sad if they closed.. you know what I'm saying?!

But this one.. well.. I just can't take it! WWWHHHHHYYYYYY????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Didn't you get the email? We go to my husband's cabin every year (on Pelican) and the first place I hit...Back Porch Quilts. I'm devastated. It is just so sad! Enjoy your trip there..I won't make it before they close. My sister-in-law and I cried over Christmas about it. :(

  2. You should buy the store and move it closer to your house! Then it could still be open and be there when you want it to.

  3. It is always sad when your favourite shop closes or an owner leaves.

  7. This is happening more and more around the country. Several quilt shops have closed in my area too and it's depressing. I'm doing my share to keep them in business!

  8. I'm sorry to hear about this. The brick and mortar shops just can't compete with the online shops anymore. This should be a lesson to everyone to shop your LQS as much as you can. If quilters continue to shop online rather than locally, this will continue to happen.

  9. Unfortunately we see this more and more. My favorite shop closed just over a year ago so I know your feelings well.

  11. Ditto here in Idaho. I have seen three shops close in three years and it is just so sad. I always try to patronize the local shops, but they just can't stay around without the volume. I also believe it's because of the increase in on-line shopping. So sorry for your loss :(

  13. I can relate. It's so sad when one of your favorite quilt stores close. I actually worked for one of my favorite stores when it closed. Very sad. Go scoop up some good deals though.

  18. Last week I went to one of my all time favorite quilt shops: Quilters' Quarters in Spring Valley, MN. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed is the walls were BLANK! No beautiful quilts. It didn't register!!!! Yup, a store-wide sale was in progress (no sign out front) and they were closing as soon as sufficient inventory, etc, was sold! Horrors!!! Why? The answer I was given: after 8 yrs. it isn't just one reason that brought this about but many. No elaboration. Tears....

  19. Maybe MSQC should become a "chain" and expand to another location so that this little shop is kept open! Never can have too much of a good thing and we can share our MO wealth!

  20. I was just in the DL area this past week. Had only been in the shop once but fell in love - lots of eye candy plus I also made the cash register jingle at that time. Had been looking forward to my stop as I am working on a banner for church and was sure they would have something I was looking for. But totally agree that the online shops have probably taken their toll. And in justification of that comment, I do do some online shopping simply because I live in a small town rural area so have to travel for such shopping so online is lots of times more convenient for me. Sad to see though shops such as Back Porch to have to close. Younger generations are probably going to be missing out on some great experiences!
