In just 2 months, it will be 2 years since me and my family moved all the way from Arizona to Minnesota. Can you believe it's been 2 years? Where did the time go?
Anyway, in the two years we've been here, I have failed to find a local sewing/quilty friend. I've met people who sew.. but none of the actual friends I've made quilt at all.
So, I decided to take a leap. I joined a bus trip offered at my LQS in June. It's a one day trip down to Rochester MN for the MN State Quilt Show.

The only person I know that will be on the bus is the owner of the quilt store (The Quilted Dog). But I'm optimistic and a little pumped. This will be my first big quilt show and I can't wait!! It's June 16th.
Hopefully I will "connect" with someone on the trip. I do have some "friend" criteria though.. I don't care how young/old she is, but she must be easy going and not get offended easily. I have a pretty sarcastic sense of humor and can have a bit of a potty mouth sometimes. (Not at first of course)
My backup plan if I don't find a sewing / quilty friend soon - I'm going to have to teach one of my existing local friends to sew!!
Are any of you "locals" planning to go to the Minnesota Quilters Conference? If you are.. holla... I'd love to connect with you!!
Any Quilt Guilds nearby? I finally met some quilty friends by joining the quilt guild here. It is 30 min away, but worth the drive every time.
ReplyDeletegood luck Heidi, your trip sounds like fun.xx
ReplyDeleteSometimes, how ever frightening it may seem, we need to take that leap and do something outside thebox. Good on you, have fun and I hope you find a buddy.
ReplyDeleteHas it been two years already??? OMGosh! Have a great trip. It sounds like a good way to meet a quilty friend to me.
ReplyDeleteHave you checked Kelly JS Sewing Center in Duluth?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.kellyjssewingcenter.com/
They may have a quilting guild or information for you. I know they have sponsored Quilt Shows in Duluth in the past.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I don't have any local quilting friends either, and I went to a quilting show all by myself. It was fun but it would've been nice to share it with someone, .especially a friend. :) At least you're going on a bus, so you'll be with other quilters all the way there and back!
ReplyDeleteHow I wish you lived in Perth Western Australia....... I moved there 2 years ago and am in exactly the same position as you, only quilting and fabric stores a less than few and far between and we have only one quilts and craft show a year which half the retailers don't come from the eastern states. Good luck with findings like minded crafty buddy
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like fun! I wish I lived close enough to go with you, too. None of my close friends quilt, either. I bet you'll make friends in no time on the bus. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great move Heidi!! ... I know what you mean about having a lack of local quilty friends!! Although there is a quilt guild somewhere around here, they meet at times which are unfortunately inconvenient for me (due mainly to child care issues), and of those I know who DO sew (most of whom are extended family!), there is only one who quilts ... and she does crazy amazing appliqué + embroidery, designed from picture to quilt, and hand quilted!! The full hog!! WAY beyond my comfort zone atm, lol! Besides this, she has also gone back to work this year, after quite a few off due to health issues, and she doesn't really do all that much quilting these days! ... I guess I'll have to just enjoy my over-the-web-quilty-friends!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great time on the bus trip!! I hope you make a (or several!!) new friends!!
WOW!!! Two years , where do the days go...
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived closer to you and not on the other side of the world becuase you sound like my sort of friend Heidi....
Have fun on your bus trip and quilt show. I am sure you will make a new quilty friend. Else you will have to get one of your friends hooked on sewing.
My friends don't do patchwork either! Enjoy the bus trip-- it will be fun.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice that you took the leap with hopes of a new friend as you never know there may be others in that trip too! One reason I love being involved with blogging is the lack of quilts friends that I enjoy here. I've moved a lot due to husbands career and made some really great friends around the world...I'm bummed I don't have same here either. We do have a guild....not the best in my book....I compare them to the really good ones I was in. This guild is old school and set in their ways. Go have fun!,
ReplyDeleteDoes your LQS have a customer info pin board, could you put up a post card inviting other ladies to go it alone together. Someone else may be glad to have some company too. I would love to be your buddy but you are a long way away. Have a good day out.
ReplyDeleteHey Heidi! I am in the same boat as you, and also in MN. My guess is we are a fair drive apart. Shoot me an email at kbreese at gmail dot com. Maybe we could meet up sometime! I had to laugh a bit at the Duluth comment. My guess is that if you are only an hour away from Rochester you are HOURS away from Duluth. Good big ole MN. None of my friends from Illinois have any idea how I can be 3 hours from the cities!!!
ReplyDeleteWish I lived close, Heidi. I'd be your quilty friend! I just found a lady in my new guild that lives about 1 mile from me and it's the best! We're getting together to sew next Saturday at her house and we drive to quilty events together. I hope you find one or two BQFs!
ReplyDeleteHeidi, enjoy the quilt show in Rochester. I am a couple of hours away from you (southern Mille Lacs county), so I am not much help-especially with the cost of gas. I hope you will be able to connect with others on the bus.

hey never even knew you lived in MN ...I have been here over 13 years now. 2 years in Anoka. I have been lucky with the group I "stitch" with. We do lots of differnt things but don't mind and often meet to celebrate our difference.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hear about the quilt show our local quilt shop just did a major expansion for more space because it's so awesome. Mostly because of the owner and staff. check out Milli P's in uptown Anoka.
have a great trip
Heidi! I did search in my Reader for Rochester to see if anyone else was going there. Where do you live? I can't tell by your info where you are in MN. I will be there for the whole show and would love to meet up.
