A Whirlwind of a Week!!

Did you happen to see the National Weather earlier this week? There was a hurricane in the upper Midwest. Ok, it wasn't a true hurricane - but it sure looked like one of the radar. When we went to bed Tuesday night, the weather man said "Wind Advisory" for our area. But he didn't say "HOLY SNOW"

We woke up Wednesday morning to our first snowfall. And when I say "We" woke up.. I actually mean the kids since me and the husband were up half the night because our power went out at around 1:30am. (and didn't come on until this morning.. some 30 hours later!!)

School was cancelled - the kids were thrilled (me, not so much). Since we have been desert dwellers for the past 13 years.. our kids couldn't wait to get out and play and enjoy their first ever "Snowday" home from school.

 They played.. and they played....

Now, one would think that a snowstorm would be the perfect time to get some sewing in. But - without electricity there wasn't much I could do. Made me think that someone needs to invent a battery powered sewing machine!!

So, with my husband at work and the kids forgetting I existed, I decided to shovel the limited amount of concrete that we have. But man was that snow HEAVY... I guess that's why it took the power lines down too. So I just shoveled a path and decided to let my husband finish when he got home (thanks honey).

And at some point while shoveling.. I think I overheard our dog say "FINALLY, after 12 years, this family realizes that I was meant to live in the snow. Don't they know I'm called an American Eskimo for a reason?!!"

She was so funny! It was the first time in her life that she had ever seen snow and she loved it. She was like a puppy again.

Behind the house we have a deer feeder. We fill it daily for the deer and it's been fun for all of us.

But since I'm the one that goes down their every day to fill it - I told my husband I want to move it closer to the house for winter. Unless I get a pair of snow shoes.. which isn't likely.

We have even started to name the deer - we have 4 regulars. This one in the picture below is "Mark".
WHY MARK? I'll tell you why! When we were discussing names, my husband said "We should use their markings to help us remember." So our 6 yr old says "Let's call him Mark cuz of his white mark". So here is a picture of Mark..

Here's to electricity!!! Stay warm out there!

Years ago when I lived in the bush (ie in a tent, no electricity or running water, wood fire etc.) my friend who lived nearby had a treadle sewing machine set up in her tent. She would sew all kinds of things for sale. She's a potter and gardener now and lives in downtown Toronto. Thanks for that memory! Oh and our power goes off about once a week. You do learn to sleep through it after a while. Love your deer feeding station!

We just got the spin off tornadic like weather, no snow here. No real tornadoes touched down around us either, well, 60 miles away was the closest. That was a stormy, stormy night, though.
We have deer, too. I never thought about actually feeding them, but that's a great idea. They used to always eat the apples from our tree, and I didn't mind, at all. This year we aren't seeing them so much. Probably because it was so hot and dry all summer that our pond dried up!

I'm quite enjoying fall and won't be ready to see snow for at least another month. But once Dec 1st hits, I'll be anticipating those first snowflakes.

This is going to be a very interesting transition for you former desert dwellers!

How fabulous. We don't get snow in Melbourne so seeing your photos was fabulous. Mark is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my gosh, love the Mark story. Kids and dogs in snow - that's a smile waiting to happen. Sorry about the power outage, but when that happens here we end up having the nicest family evenings. No background humming of computer fans or refrigerators, all of us reading together in the living room by headlamp, candlelight in the kitchen. I actually love it. For 5 hours or so, that is!

Snow already.....I hate to be cold and my biggest fear is going where it is cold and I think that fear is coming into reality too soon.

The snow looks pretty.... (trying to think of a good thing)...

I'm with the kids on this one...from a teacher's point of view, sometimes a surprise snow day is just what the doctor ordered! I'm glad they enjoyed it. Maybe you will need to get to those knitting lessons that you were promised when you moved. You won't have to worry about the electricity going out. I hope you've warmed up!

I used to have an old treadle machine, but the new fangled electric one was so much quicker and better! Our dog loves snow also, she is a real hairball, pity we live in the tropics!

Oh man...it is way too early to start that snow stuff. I think you best get a good generator soon - and another one strickly for the sewing machine!!!!

Heidi I just LOVE your snow photos. As I live down under we do not get any snow so snow looks great to me. We live on 5acres and often loose power so as Needled Mom said you need a generator. we got a good one and I can sew or go on the computer as well as run fridges and a telly. GREAT!!

Oh the snow is beautiful.

Please check and see if feeding the
deer is legal where you live......it is not legal here because it cause disease in the deer population.
I know you wouldn't want to cause them any harm unknowingly.

Happy Sewing

Snow?!?! Man, I'm jealous! We feed the deer, too -- and we name them as well! It's easier in the summer when the does come up with their fawns. As the winter comes on, it gets a little harder to distinguish them (unless they're bucks, with antlers)! Enjoy!! :)
