I recently received a newsletter in the mail from one of the quilt stores here in town. They had this little tidbit in there and I love the idea so much - I wanted to share with all of you!
Keep a container (Mason Jar works well) next to your sewing machine/work space. Toss thread scraps and bits of batting in there. Then add them to your bird suet-feeder.
The birds will use your scraps of thread and batting to build their nests. Hows that for RECYCLING!!!

Wouldn't it be fun to discover a nest with brightly colored thread worked into it!
Last summer, my daughter but a large amount of embroidery floss scraps(left over from her student's projects)out in our backyard. We definitely saw nests with colorful threads in them! I've been saving floss, yarn and thread scraps for a year and will be putting them out in a mesh bag from oranges that I saved. Fun idea!
Cool idea! I bet my eagle-eyed grandchildren would be much better at spotting colorful nests than I would...
Those tiny left over chunks of batting are good for the birdies too. Dryer lint? Not so much. The fluff in the washer and dryer after making chenille edge quilts, perfect.
What a lovely way to recycle.the birds will have really pretty nests.
That's a good idea I have so much that I bet I could help 100's of birds!! :D
So glad you shared this, I put nest building scraps out whenever I can. The birds also like dog hair and sheep's fleece as well as more refined textiles. Magpies use shiny things in their nests, pieces of tin foil etc but I don't think they'd be very comfortable!
Great reminder Heidi - I need to remember to do this.
Thank you reminding us of our feathered friends!
That's a lovely idea - thanks for sharing.
I read about putting thread and small scraps out for the birds so I started saving them in a separate bag several weeks ago. I wasn't sure how to get 'em to the birds though until I read through here. I have a net bag from oranges. Thanks for the ideas!
